SHINGLE ROOF

Shingle Roofs: Description & Characteristics

Overview
Shingles are a popular roofing choice for homes due to their affordability, easy installation, and design versatility. Typically made from asphalt, they also come in wood, slate, and synthetic materials, each with unique benefits.

Types of Shingle Roofs

  • Asphalt Shingles: Cost-effective and easy to install, available in various colors and styles. They last 15-30 years, perform well in moderate climates, and offer fire resistance but can be vulnerable to high winds and extreme temperatures.
  • Wood Shingles/Shakes: Offer a rustic look, often made from cedar or redwood. They can last up to 50 years, provide excellent insulation, but need regular maintenance to protect against moisture, pests, and fire.
  • Slate Shingles: Elegant and durable, lasting up to 150 years. They’re fireproof and weather-resistant but heavy and costly to install.
  • Synthetic Shingles: Made from rubber, polymer, or composites, mimicking slate or wood. Lightweight, durable, and low-maintenance, they resist impact, UV rays, and algae growth.

Key Characteristics

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Asphalt is budget-friendly; slate and synthetic are pricier but offer longevity.
  • Versatility: Available in various colors and styles to match any home design.
  • Installation: Quick and easy, especially asphalt, but proper installation ensures durability.
  • Maintenance: Asphalt may need occasional repairs; wood requires more upkeep; slate and synthetic are low-maintenance.
  • Durability: Lifespan varies—15-30 years for asphalt, up to 150 years for slate.
  • Energy Efficiency: Reflective granules on some shingles reduce cooling costs; wood and synthetic offer good insulation.
  • Eco-Friendly: Wood is renewable if sustainably sourced; synthetic often uses recycled materials; asphalt can be recycled but often ends up in landfills.

Product Specifications

SOFLI Impact Windows and Doors LLC offers impact-resistant roofing solutions designed to protect against hurricanes, high winds (up to 150–200 mph), and debris, meeting Miami-Dade County and Florida Building Code standards.

Available in asphalt shingles, metal panels, and composite tiles, our roofing systems feature wind uplift resistance (Class H, ASTM D7158), large missile impact protection, and insulation R-values from 6.0 to 18.0 for energy efficiency.

Standard sizes accommodate slopes from 2:12 to steep pitches, with custom options available, reducing noise by 20–30 dB and ensuring durability for 25–100+ years depending on material.

Material Options

Asphalt Shingles: Fiberglass-based with mineral granules, offering cost-effective durability, available in 3-tab or architectural styles with impact-resistant coatings.
Metal: Galvanized steel or aluminum panels with rust-resistant finishes (e.g., Kynar), lightweight and recyclable, ideal for steep slopes.
Composite Tiles: Synthetic blends mimicking slate or wood, UV-resistant and reinforced for superior impact resistance and low maintenance.
Underlayment: Synthetic or rubberized options (e.g., ice and water shield) for secondary waterproofing.

Installation and Warranty

Professional installation by SOFLI begins with a structural assessment of the roof deck (typically OSB or plywood), followed by precise application of underlayment, drip edge flashing, and roofing material using corrosion-resistant fasteners. Completed in 3–7 days for standard residential projects, our process ensures compliance with local codes, including ADA where applicable, and proper ventilation to prevent premature failure. Includes a 2-year labor warranty and manufacturer-backed material warranties (up to lifetime limited).
